Chapter 23

 

I pull Everleigh into my arms, holding her sobbing body tightly.

“I should be holding you. I’m sorry I’m such a mess, Dragon.” Chuckling softly, I kiss the top of her head.

“I’m a big boy—I think I can handle it. Besides, I like holdin’ you. Lay with me.” It wasn’t a question. Ev climbs out of my lap and into the bed before I lay down next to her. I drag her head over to my chest, exactly where I like her to be.

“I don’t want to hurt you.” She tries to pull away, but I hold her in place.

“You could never hurt me.” I run my hand through her hair, inhaling the sweet scent of her. My head is whirling, but with Everleigh in my arms, I feel at peace.

“I was so scared, Dragon. I was afraid that I’d never see you again.” Wetness follows her words as tears drip onto my chest.

“You can’t get rid of me that easily.” Chuckling, she sighs against me.

“I never want to get rid of you. I thought I was insane for even thinking about staying with you. It’s so fast. But when I thought about leaving, I couldn’t breathe. You made sense to me then. The way you hold me—touch me.” I let out a breath knowing exactly how she feels. I feel the same way about her.

“It was fast. Way faster than it should have been, but I don’t want you to go anywhere. We can learn more about each other, Ev. Don’t ever think about leavin’ me again.” Her little laugh is all I want to hear.

I know she has her doubts, and in my right mind, I do, too. That’s called life. That’s part of living.

We have to have doubts, or we’ll never see what’s right.

One thing I have no doubts about is, what I feel for her.
